Integrating NCD Care in HIV Services: Enhancing Health Outcomes

People living with HIV (PLHIV) face a higher risk of developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), leading to increased rates of non-AIDS-related morbidity and mortality.

To address this issue, the PEPFAR/CDC Afya Hatua Project implemented by THPS, has successfully incorporated NCD screening and treatment into HIV services at project-supported sites, providing comprehensive care that addresses both HIV and NCD-related health issues.

At the Ikwiriri Health Centre’s HIV Care and Treatment Clinic (CTC) in Pwani region, 1,343 PLHIV are currently enrolled in antiretroviral therapy. Between May and August 2024, 73 recipients of care were diagnosed with hypertension, and three were also identified as diabetic.

Deogratius Rweyemamu, a clinician and Hypertension Focal Person at the facility said the project has enhanced the clinic’s ability to effectively diagnose and treat NCDs.

“Since April 2024, the project has supported the clinic to provide hypertensive medications, significantly improving adherence among those diagnosed,” noted Rweyemamu.

Hawa Matimbwa, a mother of two, expressed her gratitude for the excellent screening and treatment services at Ikwiriri Health Centre, stating that her health has improved, allowing her to be more productive in her economic activities.

The PEPFAR/CDC Afya Hatua project has expanded integrated NCD screening and treatment services across all supported CTCs in Kigoma, Pwani, Shinyanga, and Tanga regions.

This initiative is not only enhancing the detection and management of chronic conditions but also improving the overall quality of life for PLHIV in these regions.
