Realizing Aspirations of children and youth living with HIV through PEPFAR HIV care and treatment projects
At the heart of Tanzania’s HIV response is a story of hope, resilience, and empowerment—embodied by the lives of young people like Asia and Hassan.
Thanks to the unwavering support of the PEPFAR/CDC-funded HIV care and treatment projects, implemented by THPS since 2011, these two 23-year-olds have not only survived the affliction of HIV but are now thriving and realizing their lifelong dreams.
Asia, who has just completed her degree in Public Administration and Local Government at Mzumbe University, and Hassan, who completed his degree in Human Resources Management at the Tanzania Institute of Accountancy, are shining examples of what can happen when support goes beyond medication.
Enrolled at the HIV Care and Treatment Clinic (CTC) at Mkuranga District Hospital in Pwani region from childhood, both Asia and Hassan were beneficiaries of PEPFAR/CDC comprehensive support package. This included access to consistent antiretroviral therapy, psychosocial support, sexual and reproductive health services and mentorship with additional support from THPS’ own family on school tuition and materials, and clothing. Through this multidimensional approach, the project ensured that HIV would not stand in the way of their dreams.
Central to the delivery of these services are compassionate healthcare providers supported by the project—such as Sweet Nderumaki, fondly known as “Mama Sweet”, a Nurse at Mkuranga District Hospital who oversees the pediatric and adolescent HIV clinic since 2010.
With the support of the THPS through PEPFAR funding, Sr Sweet has played an instrumental role in nurturing 135 children and youth at the clinic, helping them achieve an exceptional 100% viral load suppression. Her dedication and genuine love illustrate how the project empowers healthcare workers to provide person-centred care that addresses both medical, social and emotional needs.
“She is our mother away from home,” says Asia. “She cheered me through exams, gave me textbooks, and believed in my future. But none of this would have been possible without THPS funded by PEPFAR/CDC projects over the years that made everything possible.”
Dr. Redempta Mbatia, Executive Director of THPS, reflected on the achievements with pride: “Nothing excites me more than seeing the children we support thrive. Through THPS work, we are not just supporting health—we are building a future.”
Hassan, too, is filled with gratitude. “It’s a dream come true. I’m forever thankful for what PEPFAR funded HIV programs through THPS have done for me. Now, I’m ready to give back and help other children reach their potential.”
Through the PEPFAR/CDC HIV care and treatment projects, we are not just addressing the virus— we are transforming lives, bringing back hope of future and responsible citizens, building confidence, and turning dreams into reality—for a generation that once saw hope slipping away.
Sweet Nderumaki
