Pili’s Story: Age-Appropriate HIV Services Help Children Thrive in Kigoma

At Malagarasi Dispensary in Uvinza District, Kigoma, something special is happening — children living with HIV are not just surviving, they’re thriving. Thanks to the tireless work of dedicated healthcare providers and the support from the PEPFAR/CDC Afya Hatua Project, children like 15-year-old Pili Saidi are staying healthy, happy, and full of hope for the future.

A New Chapter for Pili

Back in 2019, Pili was often sick with chest pains and fever. Worried, his parents took him to Malagarasi Dispensary. That’s when they found out he was living with HIV. It was a tough moment — but it also marked the beginning of a new chapter.

Soon after his diagnosis, Pili was enrolled in the Pediatric Clinic, held monthly within the HIV care and treatment clinic (CTC). This special clinic is designed just for children and teens like Pili. It’s more than a place for check-ups and collecting medicine. It’s a safe space where young people can learn, share, play, and support one another on their journey with HIV.

Seeing other kids like me, living healthy and going to school, gave me courage to keep taking my medication,” says Pili. “The nurses and doctors are kind, and they treat us with so much love and respect. They even visit our homes sometimes to check if we’re okay. I feel supported — and I know I’ll make it to my dream of becoming a doctor one day.”

Love, Learning, and Lifesaving Support

The monthly Pediatric clinics have become a powerful tool to keep children on treatment and promote viral suppression. From October 2024 to March 2025, the clinic proudly maintained 100% HIV Viral Load suppression among children aged 10-18. That’s a big win for the community!

Pili’s father, Mr. Saidi Pili, who also receives care at the same clinic, shares his gratitude:

“These clinics have changed my son’s life. He looks forward to meeting his friends, learning new things, and coming home happier. I thank the Malagarasi Dispensary team for their care and support.”

Beyond Medicine: Building Confidence and Community

According to Angerus Mwashamba, the clinician In-Charge at Malagarasi Dispensary CTC, these monthly sessions go far beyond handing out medicine.

“We use these forums to listen to the children, help them solve challenges they face, and remind them that they are not alone”, said Mwashamba.

Thanks to the support from THPS through the PEPFAR/CDC Afya Hatua Project, we’re able to provide mentorship, transport refunds, and the motivation needed to keep them engaged and healthy.”

Pili’s journey is a shining example of how age-appropriate, child-centred care is making a real difference. With the right support, children living with HIV in Kigoma, and across Tanzania, can grow up strong, educated, and ready to build a better future for themselves and their communities.
